At the BBC Proms its not just about orchestras, there’s something that will suit literally everyones taste, whether its simply enjoying the performances or getting involved yourself. The Proms are always offering new experiences for all audiences, and there is a family atmosphere being increasingly associated with the 8 week event. For example the Proms Plus scheme offers insight and introductions to the music and performances with talks from trained professionals and even a chance to get involved with performing! There are a range of choral and singing events in which anyone, any ability, can partake. The family orientated events at the proms include being able to perform with other families in an orchestra workshop, inspiring children to get involved in the world of music whilst having fun with the family. There is also a classical music for starters class in which anyone of any age can learn to play an instrument and play some of the best known classical numbers in an orchestra of fellow beginners. The Proms isn’t just about music, there is, for example, a range of literary events lead by novelists, poets, playwrights and philosophers who will provide talks on the connections between the BBC Proms...

The Proms isn’t just about music, there is, for example, a range of literary events lead by novelists, poets, playwrights and philosophers who will provide talks on the connections between the BBC Proms and wider cultural issues. 2011 is the first year in which a poetry competition will be held at the proms. All poems will have a basic theme in that they have to be inspired by a certain piece of music at this years festival.

So the BBC Proms 2011 offer something for everyone and it is safe to say that nobody will be getting bored at the classical music festival.

The famous ‘Last night of the proms’ is considered the highlight and grand finale of the 8 week celebration of orchestral music, the event spreads out of the Albert Hall to locations all over the UK, enabling the whole country to appreciate the magic of the last night. This aspect of the proms is an example of how they have evolved since 1895, the proms organisers have modernised the event in order to keep up with the increasing amount of technology which is made available to us. For example both live performances and extensive highlights will be available on the BBC red button, enabling viewers to experience the proms from home, in addition to this many performances will be streamed over the internet so viewers can constantly keep up to date with goings on throughout the proms. The event has always played host to the top international performers from around all over the world as well as promoting the best of the British music scene including a range of orchestras and choirs. Last year over 80,000 tickets were sold on the first day of the proms because people were requesting the shows they wished to see on a given day, making for hectic but successful sales. Although the BBC proms have grown significantly since its beginning in 1895 the values of the event haven’t changed much at all, with old and new music crossing a range of genres being played to large appreciative audiences. The Royal Albert Hall still is the central focus of the event, giving the proms that spectacular yet informal atmosphere that it is so well renowned for. With this years proms kicking off last week and running through until the 10th September they are sure to be a memorable event for all who are lucky enough to witness it.
